Chuseok, an essay
Written by a delightful little 8 year old named Rachel. Everything is [sic].
Chusok is on August 15th by the lunar calendar. We put on Han-bok on Chusok. We make Song-pyeon, and perform an ancestral sacrifice. We go to the ancestor’s grave. I had a fun when I made a Song-pyeon. I was very hard when I went to the grave. Because the grave was on top of the mountain and put on high heeled shoes.
I do adore reading their writing.
My Chuseok was certainly less sacrificial and fabulous with the high-heels. In fact, I spent most of it in my apartment, chillin’ out and playing waaaaay too many games. It rained like the dickens for a couple days, so I didn’t have much else to do. I did manage to go hiking at Inwangsan again, though on the other side of the mountain. What precarious paths! Crowded due to the holiday and a little rain-slick, the trail led up what averaged out to a 45 degree incline. Someone had gone along decades before and painted white along the “suggested” route, steps roughly carved out of rock and sometimes accompanied by a rope guardrail of sorts. The safest, yet most strenuous bit ran along an ancient wall. I wondered its age, but never saw a sign in English to tell. After gettin’ mah cardio in, we made our way to Itaewon for dinner at a delicious Thai restaurant and I bought 5 books (four of which are by Douglas Adams) at the only English bookstore we’re aware of in Seoul.
All in all, a lovely day and a relaxing vacation. Coming back to work this week hasn’t been easy, less so due to the prospect of a new job in less than 2 months! October can’t shoot past fast enough.
